Uh, hey there, February, I didn't see you come in. What's up with January? To just go and leave me like that [tut tut]. I thought we'd have all this time to hang out, but then I get distracted watching videos on Blu-ray. The next thing I know, it's you, February, at my door already.
There is actually quite a bit going on with us so it's no surprise that a whole month has buzzed by.
Friday night, Jacob's students performed, and they did so well! This is the fifth Lane Middle School music perfomance I've attended, and each one is better than the last. This year's program included a few short selections from the concert band (piano, flute, and Jake on trombone), choir performances of Paul McCartney's "Waterfalls", Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love", The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize", and an outstanding solo performer on a very Lane version of "Run this Town" (Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye). Interesting side note: the latter won Best Rap/ Sung Collaboration in last night's Grammys. For those of you who know Jake, he's not the most demonstrative person, but when conducting a group of 6-8th graders it's like watching his alter ego emerge. Hopefully, we'll have the whole recording up on you tube in the next couple weeks.
Back to the wedding: we've been combing the catalogs for some song selections for our DJ friend, Jesse Jackson, to play. For the longest time, it was more entertaining to come up with songs NOT to play, such as those mentioned in the following All Songs Considered piece, "The Least Appropriate Wedding Songs Ever." My top choices would include, "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake or the Elvis song "Suspicious Minds." Great songs, just not great wedding songs.
Oh, by the way February, I'm glad you're here. Really, I am.
