So you're coming to Portland and need a place to stay. As part of the wedding planning, we've arranged a group rate a hotel in downtown Portland with easy access to the MAX lines (see this post for details).
Below is a survey of areas to stay in Portland. I'm not necessarily recommending all these places, but I thought it might be helpful for those unfamiliar with the area, traveling with children, or just looking for some different options.
Note: Travel times are by car.
Budget: <$80; Moderate: $80-120; Expensive: >$120
DOWNTOWN
Pros: Mix of large chain and boutique hotels, easy walking distance to dining/shopping/entertainment, close to MAX and buses, halfway between Welcome Reception and wedding site
Cons: Parking, Expensive (some places have more moderate prices, like the Mark Spencer)
Examples: Hotel deLuxe, The Benson, The Nines, Hotel Lucia, The Westin, Mark Spencer Hotel
DOWNTOWN WATERFRONT
Pros: Views, nearby trail for walking/running/biking, easy walking distance to dining/shopping/entertainment, halfway between Welcome Reception and wedding site
Cons: Parking, Expensive (some places have more moderate prices, like the Residence Inn)
Examples: RiverPlace Hotel, Marriot Downtown Waterfront, Residence Inn Downtown Riverplace
NORTH HARBOUR
Pros: Easy access to I-5, moderate rates, close to our house/ Welcome Reception (~5miles)
Cons: Not much dining/shopping/entertainment within walking distance, ~10 mile/ 20 mins to wedding site
Examples: Best Western Inn At The Meadows, Residence Inn Portland North Harbour
LLOYD CENTER
Pros: near MAX/ buses, easy highway access I-84 access, nearby Lloyd Center Shopping Mall, lots of familiar chain restaurants, near Rose Garden Arena (i.e. Portland Trailblazers), halfway between Welcome Reception and wedding site
Cons: Expensive, parking can be problematic
Examples: Doubletree Hotel, Crown Plaza Hotel, Rose Garden Shilo Inn
AIRPORT
Pros: MAX access to Rose Quarter/ Downtown, budget & moderate rates, good for those with an early departure!
Cons: not much within walking distance (unless you stay in Cascade Station)
Examples: aloft Portland Airport Cascade Station, Embassy Suites Airport, Quality Inn
INTERSTATE AVE
Pros: It's Portland's "Route 66"! Close to MAX and Airport, Small, budget motels
Cons: Small, budget motels, off of busy road
Examples: Viking Motel, Monticello Motel
OTHERS
Jupiter Hotel
Pros: restaurant/ club (Doug Fir Lounge) on premises, within walking of food/bars/shops, a more "unique" Portland experience, Close to Downtown, halfway between Welcome Reception and Wedding
Cons: Not family-friendly, pricey for what you get
McMenamins Kennedy School
Pros: Family-friendly, restaurant +bars+movie theater all-in-one, residential setting, ~ 5 miles/12 mins to PDX Airport, nearby Alberta Arts shopping/dining/bars (~ 1 mile)
Cons: Not easily accessible off major highways, some rooms have shared baths, can get loud
Avalon Hotel and Spa
Pros: Boutique hotel, waterfront setting, close to downtown (complimentary towncar service), near wedding site (~4miles/ 8 mins), spa, nearby trails
Cons: Expensive
